Heidi Harkins, executive director of the Professional Science Master’s programs at UNC-Chapel Hill, has been appointed to the PSM National Office’s steering committee.
In her new role, Harkins will work with graduate school and academic administrators, policymakers, business leaders and PSM program directors nationwide in developing strategies that promote the degree.
According to national Council of Graduate Schools data, applications for admission to PSM programs increased 59 percent between fall 2010 and fall 2013. UNC-Chapel Hill’s PSM degree programs are in biomedical and health informatics and in toxicology. A fully online program in digital curation is in the planning stage, with a goal of launching in fall 2017.
“Heidi is a tireless advocate for PSM programs and the many ways they support professional success,” said Steve Matson, dean of The Graduate School at UNC-Chapel Hill. “She is a champion for programs at UNC-Chapel Hill and in the state of North Carolina – and for students in these programs – and will contribute valuable leadership to the committee.”
