The Graduate School is pleased to announce Leah Townsend as Director of Graduate School Professional Programs. In her new role, Dr. Townsend is responsible for coordinating all administrative functions associated with professional programs within the purview of The Graduate School, including three Professional Science Master’s programs and the Graduate Certificate in Business Fundamentals.
In 1997, the first Professional Science Masters program was funded in an effort to fill the professional gap that existed between undergraduates with too little experience and PhDs with too much. Heidi Harkins, executive director of the UNC-Chapel Hill Professional Science Master’s program, has been elected to the National Professional Science Master’s Association Board of Directors. The Toxicology PSM program at UNC-Chapel Hill exists today in great part due to the extraordinary vision and expert guidance of its first director, Dr. Marila Cordeiro-Stone. As she has phased into retirement, and even now in full retirement, Dr. Cordeiro-Stone has worked tirelessly to help the program transition to a new director.
